Opening Hours : Monday to Friday - 8 Am to 5 Pm
The Full-time two-year MPhil programme aims at fully integrating Renewable Energy
generating technologies and environmental issues to meet the changing demands
of the energy industry, particularly in Sierra Leone and the sub-region. The
programme was designed in response to a recognized need from the energy industry
for graduates who have a detailed knowledge, appreciation and fundamental understanding
of the various sources of energy, their production, harnessing, conversion, and environmental
concerns associated with the use of energy, and how energy can be well managed in industries and
domestic settings to overcome environmental issues associated with the use of energy.
The programme is grounded in engineering and has a strong emphasis on energy systems where electricity
is the final product. However, energy is also considered in the wider context of consumption patterns,
efficiency, economics, policy and regulation. It provides students with a broad training in, and understanding of,
energy systems in the context of the sustainability of energy supply.
Applicants should have an academic background in any discipline or profession related to energy technologies. Suitable academic backgrounds include mechanical engineering, applied physics, and areas of electrical engineering relevant to power generation/distribution, and energy use. Applicants must have a second-class or Division two undergraduate degree (BSc/BEng or equivalent), with no restrictions to gender, age or citizenship. It is imperative that applicants have a sound knowledge of basic engineering sciences, including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and mathematics. Professional work experience in related fields will be considered an advantage. A sound knowledge of written and oral English is required from all applicants. Students from undergraduate background without a sound foundation of heat transfer and/or thermodynamics will be required to attend lectures in these subjects to give them the basic knowledge required for some of the courses.
Applications are also open for interested candidates who are interested in getting the Liechtenstein REED (Renewable Energy Enterprise Development) Scholarship. The deadline for Scholarship Application is 25th September 2024
The programme represents a unique opportunity for students and professionals to:
The Ministry of Energy is committed to develop its in-house expertise in energy technologies, and to supply reliable electricity to all Sierra Leoneans. This will fuel demand for qualified personnel and, thus, create job opportunities for the graduates of the programme. Students can also gain employment in the following institutions/ organizations/ companies: NGOs working in the Renewable Energy and the environment sectors, Private Renewable Energy Companies, Environmental Protection Agency, and Teaching and Research institutions.
